Fort Worth, Texas — In a tragic incident of family violence earlier this month, a 19-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting his uncle while both were traveling in a moving vehicle. The Fort Worth Police Department reported that Derrick Sanders Jr. faces a felony murder charge in the death of 40-year-old Christopher Sanders Sr.
The unsettling event unfolded on the afternoon of Dec. 1, when Christopher, seated in the passenger seat, and Derrick, positioned at the back on the driver’s side, were among six individuals in a blue Dodge Charger. The vehicle was reportedly trailing a black Chrysler 300 which had left an apartment complex close to Western Center Boulevard and proceeded northbound on Mark IV Parkway.
According to authorities, both the uncle and nephew discharged firearms at the Chrysler from their moving vehicle. The pursuit came to a grim conclusion at the Garden Gate apartment complex on North Beach Street. It was there that officers discovered the body of Christopher Sanders deceased in the Dodge.
Investigative reports indicate that Derrick Sanders was seen in surveillance footage, leaning out of the vehicle’s rear window while firing towards the Chrysler. Detectives found that during the shooting, some bullets, fired at a downward trajectory, penetrated the roof of the Dodge, subsequently striking Christopher Sanders in the head.
Police believe the attack on the Chrysler was premeditated, noting the use of gloves by those in the Dodge and obscured license plates with paper tags. The felony murder charge against Derrick Sanders reflects the unintended lethal outcome from the felony act of shooting at an occupied vehicle.
At this stage, authorities have not identified other suspects or indicated whether additional charges will be filed against anyone else involved in the incident.
