Georgia Teen’s Ex-Boyfriend Charged in Strangulation Death of Pregnant 16-Year-Old

LOGANVILLE, Ga. — In a tragic case emerging from Gwinnett County, the untimely death of 16-year-old Mia Campos, who was found deceased in a wooded area last summer, has been officially ruled as a homicide resulting from asphyxia due to neck compression. Campos, who was seven months pregnant, had been reported missing before her body was discovered near her family home.

Investigations have led to serious charges against Jesus Monroy, the ex-boyfriend of the deceased. Initially apprehended for providing misleading information to the authorities, Monroy now faces heightened allegations including malice murder, felony murder, feticide, and aggravated assault.

The last known sighting of Campos was on July 14, captured by a doorbell camera. Concerns were raised after she left her house the previous evening with an individual her family did not recognize. In the desperate search that ensued, her relatives employed a mobile phone tracking app which led them to her location approximately two minutes away from their residence, discovering her body around 1 a.m. on July 15.

Adding to the complexity of the case, it was reported that Monroy joined Campos’ family in their search for her. This involvement was remarked upon by Campos’ father, Eduardo Campos, who expressed immediate suspicion towards Monroy based on his behavior during the search. “I knew he was guilty that day,” Eduardo Campos stated, reflecting on the emotional distress and suspicions that arose watching Monroy during the search.

Driven by their loss, the Campos family has adamantly sought justice for Mia, adamant to have the responsible party face the full extent of the law. “If he’s guilty, I’m gonna make sure that he’s guilty,” Eduardo Campos emphasized, underlining a determination to ensure accountability and justice for his daughter and unborn grandchild.

Following his initial arrest, Monroy was released on a $50,000 bond in August. While out on bond, he is mandated to remain under house arrest, monitored by an ankle bracelet. Additionally, he has been ordered to avoid any contact with potential witnesses involved in the ongoing legal proceedings and was required to relinquish his passport.

The community has been shaken by the details surrounding the tragic death of the young, expectant mother. Authorities remain committed to their investigative efforts to uncover all pertinent details and ensure that justice is appropriately served in a case that has touched many both locally and beyond. The continuation of this case underscores the ongoing efforts to address and prevent acts of violence, especially those involving the most vulnerable members of the community.
