Police say the man was taken into custody after a Thursday afternoon shooting near several schools.
GRAPEVINE, Texas — A Grapevine-Colleyville ISD bus driver was arrested after police said he shot a neighbor Thursday afternoon in Grapevine, prompting several nearby campuses to go into a secure status while officers responded.
Police identified the suspect as 64-year-old Shenkoru Sleshi Meketa. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The district said Meketa drove Bus 365 and was fired after officials learned of the arrest. Police have not released a motive or the victim’s current condition.
Officers were called around 1 p.m. Thursday to Wilshire Avenue near Heritage Avenue after a man was shot in the neighborhood. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries. Police later arrested Meketa at his home. A neighbor who recorded part of the arrest told FOX 4 she saw Meketa walk out with his hands up before officers ordered him to the ground. “I saw the takedown, the gentleman arrested,” she said. “I saw him walk out of his home with his hands up and hit the deck.”
The police response led Grapevine-Colleyville ISD to place six sites in secure mode: Heritage Elementary, Heritage Middle School, Colleyville Heritage High School, Grapevine Elementary, the Early Childhood Development Center and iUniversity Prep offices. Under that status, classes continued inside, but exterior doors were locked and visitors were not allowed in. District officials said they did not initially know the shooting involved an off-duty district employee. Meketa did not report to work Thursday afternoon, and a substitute driver was assigned to his route.
The arrest also raised questions for families because of Meketa’s work as a school bus driver. District officials said in a letter to parents Thursday night that he had been terminated “based on the activities surrounding his arrest.” The district did not say how long he had worked there. Police said the shooting was not on a school campus, and the school restrictions were lifted after officers secured the area.
Meketa is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony in Texas. Investigators have not said whether more charges are possible. Police have not released details about what happened before the shooting, whether the men argued, or what type of firearm was used. Officials also have not released the victim’s name.
Neighbors described a heavy police presence in the area after the shooting. One witness said she texted a friend who lived nearby after seeing patrol cars on the street. She said the arrest was “a little jarring” because she did not yet know what had happened. Video from the scene showed officers moving in after Meketa lowered himself to the ground.
The investigation remained active Monday. Meketa had been removed from his district job, nearby campuses had returned to normal operations, and police had not announced a motive or update on the victim’s injuries.
