Greensboro, N.C. — A tragic incident unfolded just two days before Christmas in Greensboro, North Carolina, as Officer Michael Horan was fatally shot while responding to reports of an armed individual at a local grocery store. This marked a somber moment for the community during what is typically a festive season.
On the morning of the incident, Officer Horan arrived at the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive near Interstate 840. According to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Horan encountered the armed suspect shortly after arriving at the scene. A confrontation ensued, during which the assailant shot the officer before fleeing the location by car. Tragically, Horan was unable to return fire.
Assistant Police Chief MJ Harris informed the public in a Monday afternoon press conference that the details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting were still under investigation. The Greensboro Police Department described Horan, who was hired in 2017 and became a sworn officer in 2018, as an exemplary officer with a commendable track record. Besides his role in law enforcement, he was a dedicated husband and father.
In tribute to Officer Horan, memorials have been established at the police headquarters, with one positioned outside and another inside the main lobby. The Greensboro Police Officer Association has also initiated an online fundraiser to support Horan’s family during this difficult period. Harris expressed gratitude towards the community for its continued support of law enforcement members and their families.
Prior to his service with the police, Horan was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard since 2000, showcasing his long-standing commitment to public service. His death has been felt deeply across the community and among fellow service members. The North Carolina Sheriff’s Association highlighted the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face while serving the public, calling it a “senseless tragedy.”
The identity of the shooter has not been disclosed, but authorities have confirmed the suspect was apprehended following a high-speed chase involving multiple counties ending near Warsaw at the Duplin County line, some 150 miles from the crime scene. Charges against the suspect are pending as the SBI continues its investigation.
Food Lion has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that it has closed the concerned store to cooperate with the ongoing police investigation and is providing support to its employees during this challenging time. The SBI has taken the lead on the investigation, underlining the seriousness of the incident.
Governor Roy Cooper conveyed his condolences to Horan’s family and colleagues, praising the fallen officer for his bravery and dedication to safeguarding the Greensboro community. In light of this event, state Sen. Michael Garrett emphasized the need for bolstered resources and improved safety measures for law enforcement officers statewide.
This incident marked the second loss for the Greensboro Police Department in less than a year. Officer Philip Dale Nix was also killed in December of the previous year when he was off-duty, attempting to intervene in a crime at a local convenience store.
Such recurring tragedies underscore the risks undertaken by law enforcement officers and the profound impact of their service on their communities and families, especially highlighted during what are supposed to be joyful, peaceful seasons.
