Greensboro Officer Fatally Shot at Grocery Store; Suspect Captured After Multi-County Chase

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Authorities have identified a man accused of fatally shooting a local police officer just days before Christmas inside a supermarket. The incident left the community in shock during a festive period and sparked a multi-county manhunt culminating in the suspect’s arrest hours later.

Officer Michael Horan, a member of the Greensboro Police since 2017, was responding to a reported firearms incident at a Food Lion store on Lawndale Drive near Interstate 840 in northern Greensboro, when the tragedy occurred. According to the State Bureau of Investigation, Officer Horan, who was unable to use his weapon, was shot by 34-year-old Tarell Isaac McMillian after a brief altercation and died at the scene.

Greensboro Police Assistant Chief MJ Harris, addressing reporters, explained that the circumstances leading up to Officer Horan’s shooting were under thorough investigation. The fallen officer, described as “excellent” and highly regarded within the department, leaves behind a spouse and child.

In the wake of Horan’s death, the local community and the Greensboro Police Officer Association promptly organized memorials and a fundraising campaign to support his grieving family. Tributes and a memorial are currently in place at police headquarters, providing a space for colleagues and residents to remember Horan’s service and life.

Following the shooting, ABC11 reported that McMillian fled the scene, sparking a pursuit that extended over 150 miles to Duplin County. Law enforcement officers from multiple departments, including the Johnston and Sampson County Sheriffs and the Highway Patrol, collaborated in the chase which ultimately ended near Warsaw at the Duplin County line.

The incident prompted a statement from Food Lion, articulating deep sorrow over the violent act that unfolded at their Greensboro location. Emphasizing cooperation with the ongoing police investigation, the company announced the temporary closure of the affected store and assured support for affected employees during this challenging time.

Governor Roy Cooper also expressed his condolences via social media, lamenting the loss of Officer Horan, whom he praised for his courageous and dedicated service to the Greensboro community. Horan’s death marks the second loss of a Greensboro officer in the line of duty within the last year, following the off-duty death of Officer Philip Dale Nix in December 2023.

This latest incident underscores the dangers police officers face daily and sparks further dialogue regarding the safety and well-being of law enforcement personnel. The entire Greensboro community, while mourning, remains united in honoring Officer Horan’s ultimate sacrifice, as the investigation into the fatal encounter continues under the direction of the State Bureau of Investigation.
