Residents returned to bullet-damaged property after police responded to reports of a man firing a rifle from a neighborhood home.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Families in a North Las Vegas neighborhood were assessing damage to homes and vehicles after a man allegedly fired repeatedly from a front porch Sunday, sending bullets into property across the street.
North Las Vegas police said officers were called about noon July 19 to the 6000 block of Yellowhammer Place, near Deer Springs Way and the Las Vegas Beltway. Callers reported that a man was randomly firing an AR-15-style rifle, according to the department. Police said no one was struck by the gunfire.
Video obtained by KLAS-TV appeared to show a man standing near the entrance of a home and firing toward neighboring properties. Several houses and parked vehicles were hit, leaving visible bullet damage in the residential area.
The family living at the home where the gunfire originated told the television station that no one from the household was there during the shooting. Family members said they were shaken after seeing the video and returning to the damaged neighborhood.
The footage appeared to show rounds being fired across the street rather than at a clearly identified person or target. Police described the shooting as random, but investigators had not announced a motive or explained what may have led to the gunfire.
Officers approached the man and attempted to take him into custody. Police said he resisted before officers apprehended him. The department has not released further details about the confrontation or specified how long it lasted.
After the arrest, the man became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital, police said. He was later pronounced dead. Authorities had not released his name or provided an official cause of death as of Tuesday.
Police said impairment was suspected, though the department did not identify the substance involved or explain the evidence supporting that preliminary assessment. Investigators also had not said whether the rifle was recovered or how many rounds were fired.
The absence of shooting injuries offered some relief to residents, but the damaged walls, windows and vehicles showed how close the episode came to causing wider harm. Authorities had not released an estimate of the property damage or said how many individual homes and cars were struck.
The shooting and the man’s death remained under investigation. Police had not announced when additional information, including identification and medical findings, would be released.
