“Gunfire Erupts in Ogun State as Customs Officers Clash with Armed Drug Traffickers in Bold Anti-Smuggling Operation”

Iwoye, Nigeria — A violent confrontation between members of the Nigeria Customs Service and suspected drug traffickers has left two officers critically injured, following an anti-smuggling operation on January 22. The incident unfolded in the Akokoro area of Imeko-Afon Local Government, drawing immediate attention to the dangers faced by law enforcement in the region.

During the operation, customs officers acting on reliable intelligence intercepted a large truck believed to be transporting illicit drugs and other contraband. As the officers prepared to secure the vehicle, a group of armed assailants launched a premeditated attack, blocking access routes with barricades and firing at the officers, which resulted in serious injuries.

The attackers systematically obstructed reinforcements, creating a hostile environment that enabled them to flee with the intercepted truck. This act not only undermines law enforcement efforts but also poses significant risks to community safety and national security.

Two officers sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving intensive medical care. The customs service confirmed that investigations are underway to identify the attackers and hold them accountable for their actions.

Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, the Acting Customs Area Controller for Ogun I, expressed strong condemnation of the attack, labeling it a barbaric act that will not deter the agency’s mission. He emphasized the determination of the Nigeria Customs Service to combat smuggling, affirming their ongoing commitment to maintaining border security and public health.

In light of this incident, Afeni has called upon traditional leaders and community heads to take proactive measures against smuggling and violence directed at security personnel. He stressed that those engaging in such unlawful activities will face serious legal repercussions.

The Nigeria Customs Service remains steadfast in enforcing the Nigeria Customs Service Act of 2023, underscoring its goal to protect the nation from illegal trafficking and ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens. As the investigation continues, local communities are urged to support lawful measures and discourage violent resistance against authorities.
