President Donald Trump was unharmed after agents evacuated him from the Washington Hilton.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A gunman opened fire Saturday night outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, forcing Secret Service agents to evacuate President Donald Trump, the first lady and senior officials from the ballroom.
The shooting turned one of Washington’s most watched media events into a crime scene. Federal officials said the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, was taken into custody after gunfire near a security screening area. One federal officer was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and was expected to recover.
Witnesses said the dinner had only begun when loud bangs were heard near the ballroom entrance. Guests ducked under tables as agents moved toward the sound of gunfire and surrounded the president. Trump later praised law enforcement, saying officers “acted quickly and bravely.” Officials said the suspect did not enter the main ballroom.
Authorities said Allen had a shotgun, a handgun and knives when he reached the checkpoint area. Investigators were reviewing surveillance video, hotel records and electronic devices to determine how he entered the property and whether he planned to target Trump or other administration officials. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said early evidence pointed to Trump as a likely target.
The Washington Hilton has long hosted the annual dinner, which brings together presidents, journalists, lawmakers, entertainers and guests. The hotel is also known as the site where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. Saturday’s attack renewed scrutiny of security at high-profile political events, especially after prior threats and attacks involving Trump.
Federal prosecutors were preparing charges including attempted murder and assault on a federal officer. Officials said more charges could follow as the FBI, Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department continue the investigation. Allen was expected to make an initial court appearance after medical evaluation and processing.
Inside the ballroom, guests described confusion, fear and silence after agents shouted commands. Some attendees stayed on the floor while others were moved out in groups. White House Correspondents’ Association leaders later said the dinner would be rescheduled, while officials said security plans for any new date would be reviewed.
Trump returned to the White House after the evacuation and later addressed the shooting. Investigators continued searches in Washington and California on Sunday, with the next major step expected in federal court.
