The suspect’s rampage began near the intersection of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue around 1:07 a.m., with police witnessing a subsequent shooting shortly after on Orange Avenue, south of Washington Street. Authorities managed to apprehend a 17-year-old male suspect shortly after the incidents. His identity has been withheld pending formal charges. Disturbingly, surveillance footage captured the suspect casually moving through the crowd and firing the weapon, further intensifying the fright of an evening meant for lighthearted revelry.
Police Chief Rodney Smith described the ordeal during a press conference, noting the high number of police officers patrolling the area due to Halloween being one of the busiest nights of the year downtown. “The suspect passed multiple officers undeterred, indicative of a determined mindset to cause harm,” Smith explained.
Video evidence from security cameras was crucial in tracking the suspect’s movements before and after the shootings, as he maneuvered through the holiday crowd. State Attorney Andrew Bain is considering the severity of the charges, noting the possibility of trying the 17-year-old as an adult due to the multiple victims and the overt audacity of the crime.
