Health Officials Warn of Shigella Outbreak Linked to Cape Verde After Six British Fatalities

London, United Kingdom – The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is currently probing a notable spike in shigella infections that has raised alarms regarding potential public health implications. Many reported cases appear to be linked to recent travel, particularly to the islands of Cape Verde.

This investigation follows the tragic news of six British tourists who died after visiting Cape Verde since January 2023. The timeline of these fatalities includes four deaths that occurred between August and November 2023.

Gauri Godbole, a leading expert in gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA, announced, “We are currently examining various cases of Shigella within the UK. A significant number of individuals who have fallen ill traveled to Cape Verde, primarily residing in hotel accommodations in the Santa Maria and Boa Vista regions.”

Shigella is known to cause severe gastrointestinal distress, including symptoms like watery and bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. The bacteria is typically transmitted through consumption of contaminated food or drink, a method frequently observed in travelers. Additionally, it can spread during and after sexual contact.

From October 1 to December 22, 2023, the UK documented 137 confirmed cases of Shigella, with 109 of these involving individuals who had recently traveled to Cape Verde. This stark statistic has prompted health officials to issue a warning regarding proper hygiene practices to curb the spread of the infection.

The UKHSA is urging the public to adopt heightened hygiene measures, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive handwashing. Officials recommend washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet, changing diapers, or before preparing meals to minimize risk.

Travelers returning from high-risk areas are particularly advised to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms after their return. The agency is working diligently to trace and contain the outbreak, ensuring that public health remains a top priority.

As health authorities continue to monitor the situation, vigilance in personal hygiene is essential to prevent further transmission of the bacteria. Shigella infections underscore the critical need for awareness and preventive practices, especially for those traveling abroad.
