HENDERSON, Nev. — A heart-wrenching road rage incident on a local freeway escalated into tragedy when an 11-year-old boy was shot dead. Newly released police bodycam footage reveals the moment the boy’s stepfather, Valente Ayala, confronted officers, devastated and pleading about his stepson’s fate.
On November 15, Ayala was driving his stepson, Brandon Dominguez, to school when he and 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns found themselves embroiled in a dangerous game of lane changing on Interstate 215. Tensions soared as both drivers exchanged heated words before the situation turned fatal.
The released video shows Ayala, who is visibly shaken, collapsing on the freeway while crying out in agony. He pointed towards his Chevy SUV, where Brandon lay unresponsive in the backseat. In stark contrast, Johns approached an officer, reportedly admitting to the shooting with a chilling calm. Eyewitnesses noted the stark difference between the stepfather’s grief and Johns’ demeanor during the encounters with police.
“I shot at him, bro,” Johns said, later expressing remorse while acknowledging that the confrontation spiraled out of control. He referred to the road rage incident as “100 percent my fault,” adding that he wasn’t aware a child was in the vehicle when he opened fire.
Authorities stated that the altercation escalated when both men accelerated aggressively, either trying to outmaneuver one another or prove a point. After the gunfire rang out, Ayala crashed into Johns’ vehicle, attempting to stop the confrontation. Eyewitnesses described the chaos as the two men exited their cars and engaged in another physical altercation before officers intervened.
Tragically, Brandon, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has left a significant void in his family. Ayala and Brandon’s mother have since set up a GoFundMe campaign, which has garnered nearly $38,400 to support funeral expenses and honor their son’s memory.
In their tribute, they remembered Brandon as a vibrant child who brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. “Brandon was the light of our family,” they wrote, “with a playful spirit and a heart full of pure joy.”
Johns faces serious charges, including open murder and discharging a firearm into a vehicle. He is expected to appear in court on December 4. The tragic incident has sparked discussions about the alarming prevalence of road rage, raising concerns over the safety of drivers and passengers on busy highways.
