HOUSTON — A father is grateful for his quick-thinking son after a harrowing incident outside their apartment in southwest Houston. The 71-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, believes he narrowly escaped a serious situation thanks to his son’s timely intervention.
Surveillance footage captures the moment the victim returned to his Gulfton-area residence from a shopping trip. As he opened the door, a masked assailant followed closely behind, seizing the opportunity to launch an attack. Within moments, the attacker had the man in a chokehold, pulling him to the ground outside their home.
The victim recalled losing consciousness during the confrontation, stating that he felt the intruder rummaging through his pockets in search of valuables. Having immigrated from El Salvador, he reflected on his two years of peaceful living in the Glenmont apartment complex and noted that he never expected to face such a threat.
Fortunately, his adult son was nearby, seated on the couch when he heard the commotion. He quickly sprang into action, running outside to confront the suspect. According to him, seeing his father on the ground prompted an immediate response. “I started yelling at the guy,” he recalled. During the struggle, he managed to knock the intruder’s hat off, adding to the chaotic scene.
The suspect fled the scene, and police are actively pursuing leads to identify him. Investigators noted that the assailant communicated in a dialect common to Honduras or El Salvador and will likely face enhanced charges due to the victim’s age.
“I’m just relieved that we’re both okay,” the victim expressed, appreciating his son’s courage during such a frightening episode. He emphasized their shared gratitude for not sustaining serious injuries.
