Barron, Wisconsin — A family is reeling from the tragic death of a young man who was fatally shot while attempting to protect his pregnant sister during a violent confrontation. Tyler Sadowski, 20, was killed in an act of bravery on Oct. 1, as his 17-year-old sister, Makayla, was being attacked by her boyfriend.
Law enforcement discovered Tyler’s body at a residence in Barron following reports of gunfire. Makayla, who was seven months pregnant at the time, was also shot and taken to a local hospital. Her family has since confirmed that both she and her newborn are in stable condition. The baby has been delivered safely, according to relatives.
Initial statements from the Barron County Sheriff’s Office did not disclose the victims’ identities, but a GoFundMe campaign established by the family revealed their names. The family’s fundraising efforts describe Tyler as a hero, stating he died defending his sister from a violent act. Their mother had been waiting outside with Makayla’s 2-year-old child at the time of the incident.
Investigators later identified the shooter as 17-year-old Marcus Hinojosa. He was found injured with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported for medical care, but succumbed to his injuries a few days later. The relationship between Hinojosa and Makayla has been confirmed as romantic.
According to police reports, the shooting took place shortly after Makayla and her family arrived at the apartment around 2 p.m. Tyler was shot as he entered to check on his sister. A family member reported that their mother had been waiting in the car when the tragic events unfolded.
The community has been deeply affected, with fundraising initiatives reflecting the family’s grief. A statement from the fundraiser described Tyler as a loving brother and uncle, emphasizing his kindness and dedication to family. “Losing him has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled,” said his family.
Authorities are also aware of a disturbing video related to the incident circulated on social media. The Barron County Sheriff’s Office has requested its removal from the platform, highlighting community safety and the sensitivity surrounding such a tragedy. The social media company confirmed that they have acted to remove any instances of the video.
As the investigation continues, the motive for the shooting remains unclear. Family members continue raising funds for both Makayla and her children, with avenues for donations expanding beyond the GoFundMe campaign.
