Wayne, Michigan — A terrifying incident unfolded at a church in Wayne on Sunday when a gunman opened fire outside, prompting swift action from church security and law enforcement. The shooter has been identified as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning, a local resident who reportedly had attended services at CrossPointe Community Church in the past.
According to police reports, Browning arrived at the church armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a semi-automatic handgun, along with a substantial supply of ammunition. The Wayne Police Department received an emergency call at approximately 11:06 a.m. about a man behaving erratically in the church parking lot, leading to concerns from congregants. Only minutes later, reports indicated that shots had been fired.
Witness accounts revealed that a person in a pickup truck struck Browning in an effort to thwart his attack. Browning was ultimately shot by a member of the church’s security team as he approached the church entrance. Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. recounted that the initial sounds of gunfire were mistaken for construction noise, as he believed someone was using a jackhammer. Following the incident, the pastor reached out to Browning’s mother, a church member who is reportedly struggling to cope with the news. “We don’t hold anything against her,” he added, emphasizing their support for families affected by the tragedy.
