MINQUADALE, Del. — A gunfight erupted in a DMV office near Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the tragic death of a Delaware state trooper. Witnesses report that the wounded officer, who was working an overtime shift, attempted to protect a nearby employee just moments before the gunman fatally shot him.
According to the Delaware State Police, the 44-year-old suspect entered the Hessler Boulevard facility around 2 p.m., initially appearing as a customer. Shortly after his arrival, he approached the trooper, seated at the reception desk, and opened fire. Despite being seriously injured, the trooper managed to push a DMV worker out of the line of fire before he was shot a second time, which proved to be fatal.
A swift response came from a New Castle County police officer, who confronted the assailant and shot him dead at the scene. The identities of those involved in the incident have not yet been disclosed as authorities continue their investigation.
Colonel William Crotty, superintendent of the Delaware State Police, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the officer. “We lost a brother, a son, a best friend, a coach, a husband, and a father,” he said. “His last actions were those of a hero, a hero who saved lives today while sacrificing his own.”
As the fallen trooper’s body was transported from Christiana Hospital to the medical examiner’s office, fellow troopers paid tribute by saluting during the procession. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer remarked on the tragedy, stating, “He made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow Delawareans. Our heart breaks for his family.”
Videos captured at the scene displayed evidence of the violent confrontation, including a visible bullet hole in a window and personal items strewn across the flooring of the DMV office. Although the shooting was chaotic, several minor injuries were reported. A 40-year-old woman was hospitalized for non-gunshot-related injuries, while another individual, aged 35, declined transport after being evaluated for shortness of breath. A second state trooper also received medical attention for a minor injury unrelated to gunfire.
The community remains shaken by the incident, with local residents expressing their condolences and support for the officer’s family in the wake of this senseless violence. The loss of life in the shooting has sparked discussions about safety in public spaces, prompting officials to review existing security measures at locations like the DMV.
