Heroic Neighbors Thwart Sexual Assault and Save Woman and Child in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA — A Los Angeles man faces severe legal charges after allegedly attacking a senior citizen and a young child, sparking community outrage and a swift response from local authorities. The incident, which stirred fears and courage within the West Los Angeles neighborhood of Sawtelle, has led to the arraignment of 33-year-old Ishmail Bangura, who pleaded not guilty to the charges on March 5.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman reported that Bangura is charged with one count of assault intended to commit forcible rape during a first-degree residential burglary and one count of child abuse likely to cause significant bodily harm or death. Both charges are serious felonies and underscore the severity of the allegations against Bangura.

The attack reportedly took place on Feb. 27, inside an apartment complex where Bangura is accused of first assaulting a three-year-old girl. Subsequently, he allegedly broke into the residence of a 63-year-old woman, physically assaulting her inside before perpetrating a sexual assault outdoors.

District Attorney Hochman condemned the violence, emphasizing the community’s moral duty to protect its most vulnerable members — children and the elderly. “Such acts of violence are particularly abhorrent because they exploit the fragility of our most at-risk citizens,” said Hochman, firmly advocating for stringent legal consequences against such crimes.

Quick-thinking and bravery from neighbors interrupted the brutal assault. Witnesses detained Bangura, restraining him until law enforcement arrived, potentially preventing further harm. The elderly victim sustained serious injuries, with bruised arms and stitches required for wounds on her forehead.

At Bangura’s arraignment, prosecutors advocated for preventive detention, reflecting the gravity of his alleged crimes. However, the court set bail at $2 million after denying the motion, with the next court date scheduled for April 16 at the Airport Courthouse.

A protective order has been issued for the victims in the hope of providing some security and reassurance following the traumatic event. If convicted on all counts, Bangura could face a life sentence plus an additional 13 years, and he would be mandated to register as a sex offender for life.

The Los Angeles Police Department, alongside Deputy District Attorney Matthew T. Bunnett from the Sex Crimes Division, is leading the ongoing investigation and prosecution. The community of Sawtelle, while shaken by the incident, has shown resilience and unity in the face of what many see as a disturbing indicator of broader societal issues that demand vigilant safeguarding of vulnerable populations.
