Heroism Honored: LVMPD Foundation Recognizes Officers for Bravery During UNLV Mass Shooting

LAS VEGAS, NV – Two officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were honored for their heroism during the mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The LVMPD Foundation presented the awards to Officers Jacob Noriega and Ty Vesperas at a ceremony held at Gatsby’s inside Resorts World. The officers were recognized for their courage during the shooting on December 6, where they saved the life of a man amidst the tragedy that claimed the lives of three other victims.

The honors were part of the “Good Ticket” program, which aims to acknowledge law enforcement officers who go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the citizens of Clark County. According to Metro Assistant Chief Reggie Rader, the officers were running towards the gunfire when they found a shooting victim, and their training kicked in instantly.

Rader emphasized the importance of officers being able to quickly shift gears from stopping violent action to providing first aid, emphasizing the crucial role of specialized training programs like “stop the bleed” that teach law enforcement officers how to use combat-level first aid kits. This training is made possible by organizations like the LVMPD Foundation, which has built and funded the Joint Emergency Training Institute, known as JETI.

The LVMPD Foundation Executive Director, Karen Marben, expressed how the event highlighted the bravery of the officers and the significance of their training and top-level equipment, underscoring the impactful role of philanthropic funding from community members. As a token of appreciation, Noriega and Vesperas were presented with a two-night staycation at Resorts World.

Overall, the recognition of Officers Noriega and Vesperas serves as a reminder of the dedication and courage displayed by law enforcement officers in the face of tragedy, and the vital role that ongoing specialized training plays in preparing them for such events.
