High School Principal Detained for DUI and Cocaine Possession

TAMPA, FL – The start of the school year at Leto High School is overshadowed by the arrest of its newly appointed principal, Scott Hazlett. Just a week before classes resume, Hazlett was charged with driving under the influence and cocaine possession.

Hazlett’s long tenure with the Hillsborough County School District was set to continue with his leadership at Leto High School. However, his recent arrest has raised questions about his future role.

Linda Freed, a local advocate with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, expressed her relief that the situation was contained. “Thankfully, the officer’s intervention prevented potential tragedy,” she said.

The arrest occurred early Saturday on East Fowler Avenue, where Hazlett was stopped for speeding. Police observed signs of impairment and discovered cocaine in his vehicle.

Freed criticized Hazlett for failing to set a proper example for students. “It’s disappointing to see someone in his position act irresponsibly,” she commented.

Last month, Hazlett was publicly acknowledged by the district for his new role. Now, following his arrest, he has been placed on administrative leave. The district expressed concern over the allegations and commended law enforcement for their swift action.

With a $3,500 bond posted, Hazlett’s future at Leto High School remains uncertain as the district assesses the situation.

As the new school year looms, ensuring leadership stability at Leto High School is a priority amidst this unexpected challenge.
