Liberty, Texas — Jury selection is underway in the murder trial of 50-year-old Sarah Hartsfield, who faces allegations of murdering her fifth husband, Joseph Hartsfield, with insulin. The case has drawn considerable attention in Texas since Joseph’s death in January 2023, with prosecutors claiming that Sarah manipulated her husband’s diabetes to disguise her actions.
Hartsfield has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were formalized in a grand jury indictment filed in February. Prosecutors assert that she “intentionally and knowingly” caused Joseph’s death by means that remain unspecified in the indictment. His obituary states he died in a hospital, attended by his wife, due to complications following an ischemic stroke.
Currently incarcerated at the Chambers County Jail, Sarah Hartsfield’s bond is set at $2 million. Authorities allege that she used her husband’s pre-existing medical condition as a cover for his murder. Specifically, they contend that she administered excessive doses of insulin and waited hours before calling emergency services.
In the days following Joseph’s hospitalization, investigators located several insulin pens in proximity to his bedside, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death. Sheriff Brian Hawthorne lauded his team’s efforts in identifying what he described as suspicious factors surrounding this case, which could have been attributed merely to an illness.
While prosecutors outline a narrative of premeditated murder, the defense argues that Joseph’s death was an unfortunate outcome of his medical issues. They contend that the alleged actions of Sarah Hartsfield should not automatically suggest foul play.
The intricacies of Hartsfield’s marital history add another layer of complexity to the case. Previously married four times, her relationships have often captured attention. Her first husband, Titus Knoernschild, claims that during their difficult separation in the mid-1990s, Sarah threatened him, suggesting he might not survive their divorce. The couple divorced in 1995, but Knoernschild stated she continued to harass him for years thereafter.
In a later marriage, Sarah faced further scrutiny when she was arrested in 1996 for allegedly assaulting her second husband during a domestic dispute; the charges were ultimately dropped. Her tumultuous romantic history continued as her third marriage ended in divorce and a subsequent fiancée, David Bragg, was shot and killed in 2018. Sarah contended that she acted in self-defense, and prosecutors cleared her of wrongdoing.
Following several marital dissolutions, Sarah married Joseph Hartsfield in 2022. Friends and neighbors indicated that Joseph was contemplating leaving Sarah, a decision that became impossible after he was found unresponsive due to a diabetic crisis on Jan. 7, 2023.
The Harris County Medical Examiner later ruled Joseph’s death was due to complications from toxic exposure to insulin. Following the investigation, Sarah was arrested and indicted for murder in February 2023. As jury selection continues, the trial is set to advance with opening statements soon to follow, marking a critical moment in the ongoing saga surrounding this high-profile case.
