Tampa, Fla. — A Hillsborough County jail inmate faces a possible 30-year prison sentence after reportedly assaulting a detention deputy, an incident captured on the jail’s security systems that has prompted a strong reaction from legal authorities and concerns over jail management.
The assault occurred inside a jail housing unit while the deputy was attempting to handcuff the inmate, identified as Fulton. Officials stated that Fulton resisted aggressively and struck the deputy in the face with a closed fist. The altercation lasted approximately four minutes before another inmate intervened to help restrain Fulton.
Following the incident, during Fulton’s pretrial detention hearing, State Attorney Suzy Lopez expressed her disgust after viewing the footage and advocated for the maximum sentence. “This is one of the most violent videos I have ever seen. It absolutely turned my stomach,” Lopez remarked. She emphasized the danger Fulton posed to the community, highlighting his background as an accused violent criminal from Broward County currently in Hillsborough for a probation violation.
The duration of the fight raised questions and concerns among law enforcement experts about the efficacy of current jail security measures and staff training. Joe Rojas, a retired corrections officer with 30 years of experience, expressed his shock over the extended duration of the altercation. “Four minutes is an eternity in such situations, it’s ridiculous and that’s scary. It’s amazing that he survived,” said Rojas.
During the melee, the deputy’s radio was knocked away, preventing immediate communication outside the housing unit for backup, which further delayed intervention. This incident has sparked a broader discussion about staffing levels in correctional facilities.
The sheriff’s office, citing the violent nature of the footage, requested a court order to restrict media access to the video, with a ruling on this expected soon.
