Police said the victim had been questioned and released earlier Sunday night.
HOUSTON, Texas — A man was fatally shot Sunday night in Houston’s Greater East End hours after officers questioned and released him during a nearby trespassing call, police said.
Houston police said officers were called just after 9 p.m. to Canal Street near West Hedrick, where they found the wounded man. He was taken to a hospital and later died. His name had not been released Monday.
Investigators said officers had responded earlier that night to a report of a man roaming in a backyard in the same area. Officers found two men, one in the backyard and another in the front yard. Police said one man was arrested, while the other was questioned and released. Houston police Lt. J.P. Horelica said the man who was released was later found shot.
“When they arrived what they found was the victim that had been shot was the male that was released a few hours ago,” Horelica said. He said investigators did not yet know whether the trespassing call and the shooting were connected.
Police said no suspect had been identified publicly, and no arrest had been announced. Investigators also had not said what led to the shooting or whether the victim had been targeted. Witnesses at the scene tried CPR before Houston Fire Department crews arrived, according to police.
The shooting remains under investigation by Houston police homicide detectives. Officers were working to determine the victim’s movements after he was released, who he encountered and whether the earlier call played any role in the fatal shooting.
As of Monday afternoon, police said the suspect remained at large and the victim’s identity was pending release.
