INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A local man is now in custody, accused of fleeing the scene after a deadly hit-and-run incident that occurred on the east side of Indianapolis last July. The tragedy unfolded on Massachusetts Avenue, leading to an extensive six-month investigation by local authorities. In January, criminal charges were filed against the suspect, who was eventually located in Texas and brought back to Marion County this week to face justice.
The incident was captured on surveillance video, which shows a silver Chrysler striking a red Nissan. The collision caused the small SUV to flip and crash off the road, ultimately resting on its side. Emergency responders arrived at the scene in July 2024, but tragically, 30-year-old Yvonne Castro succumbed to a head injury sustained in the crash after being ejected from the vehicle. While the crash itself may have been accidental, the situation escalated into a criminal case when the Chrysler driver was seen speeding away from the scene.
Abandoning the scene of a crash is a serious offense, and after the fatal incident, the suspect’s vehicle was found deserted at a Kroger on 16th Street, where it was subsequently towed. An affidavit revealed that police utilized cell phone records to place 40-year-old Dustin Harvey near the scene, which contributed to the charges against him. Additionally, surveillance footage from Victory Field, where Harvey was employed, allegedly depicted him driving the Chrysler prior to the crash.
The death of Castro marked one of 31 record-breaking fatal hit-and-run cases investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in 2024. Authorities continue to stress the importance of accountability, urging all drivers to adhere to road rules, remain vigilant, and stay at the scene of an accident, as required by Indiana law.
Harvey is scheduled to appear in court for his initial hearing later this week. Until then, he remains in custody, facing the consequences of his alleged actions.
