Palm Bay, Florida – A 26-year-old man faces charges of fatally shooting his mother, sister, and grandfather, as well as wounding his 15-year-old nephew and another person was indicted by a Brevard grand jury on Tuesday. The shooting has raised questions about the shooter’s mental competency as the debate over pursuing the death penalty in the case continues.
Ta’Shawn Taylor was formally charged with three counts of first-degree premeditated murder in the Jan. 20 shooting deaths of Lisa Suglam, 31, Angella Suglam, 60, and Stephen Suglam, 79, in the family’s Palm Bay home. In addition to the murder charges, he was also charged with two counts of attempted murder in the shootings of Kamauri Curry, 15, and Gary Taylor, 59. He is currently being held on a no-bond status at the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes.
The deadly shooting unfolded about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Woodlake Village Apartments complex, where Taylor shot multiple family members, including his mother and sister. Kamauri Curry, who was shot in the head, is currently recovering from the ordeal and is expected to undergo extensive physical therapy.
The case is the third incident involving three or more homicides to take place in Brevard County since the beginning of 2023. In the previous incidents, individuals were charged with shooting multiple family members before being confronted by law enforcement.
The Brevard grand jury’s indictment of Taylor has prompted discussions about the possibility of pursuing the death penalty.
