Infant Sleep Sharing Linked to Multiple Unsafe Sleep Factors, Study Finds

ATLANTA, GA – A recent study conducted by researchers at the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion found that most cases of sudden unexplained infant death (SUID) had multiple unsafe sleep factors present, regardless of sleep location. The study, published in Pediatrics, examined 7,595 cases of SUID and revealed that 59.5% of the cases involved sleep surface sharing when the infants died, with at least 76% having multiple unsafe sleep factors present.

The infants who were found to be sharing a sleep surface had a larger number of other unsafe sleep factors, and nearly one-third of them had all three unsafe sleep factors present, including soft or loose bedding or objects, not being in a crib, and being in a prone or side position. Understanding the motivations for surface sharing and the impact of modeling behavior is crucial in shaping conversations on safe sleep guidance, according to the researchers.

The study also found that sharing infants were most commonly non-Hispanic Black, while non-sharing infants were most commonly non-Hispanic white. Moreover, exposure to prenatal maternal cigarette smoking was more common among sharing infants, as was being supervised by a parent at the time of death. The study’s limitations included the reliance on witness reports of an often chaotic scene during death investigations.

In a separate policy statement also published in Pediatrics, researchers advocated for the establishment of a national surveillance system to track sudden unexpected infant deaths, as well as recommended that childhood fatality review teams provide feedback to identify systemic issues that could be improved to prevent future child deaths.

This study highlights the importance of safe sleep practices and the need for a better understanding of the factors contributing to sudden unexplained infant deaths. It also underscores the significance of implementing policies and surveillance systems to address this critical public health issue.
