Tuscaloosa County, Ala. — A shooting incident on Friday morning left one man dead and another injured, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities who are exploring claims of self-defense. The shooting occurred around 9:40 a.m. along Billy Bingham Road in Samantha, a rural area of Tuscaloosa County.
Responding deputies from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire. They discovered one man deceased and another suffering from injuries deemed non-life-threatening. According to Captain Marty Sellers, co-commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), initial witness statements provided crucial information regarding potential suspects and a vehicle of interest.
As VCU investigators took charge of the case, they located the vehicle, which, at the time, was occupied by an individual not connected to the incident. This lead eventually helped authorities identify and apprehend a suspect associated with the shooting. “After gathering evidence and interviewing those involved, our team was able to assess a credible claim of self-defense regarding the shooter,” Sellers stated.
In instances where a homicide may involve self-defense, law enforcement typically refrains from making immediate arrests. Instead, they conduct a thorough investigation and compile their findings to present to the district attorney’s office. The DA will then determine if the case should be brought before a grand jury to decide on any potential charges.
At this time, the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, as officials are awaiting notification of the family. The shooting follows another incident earlier in the week that is being investigated as a possible accidental death. Should it be confirmed as an accident, the Friday shooting will mark the first homicide case handled by the VCU this year, following their involvement in 21 homicide cases in 2022.
