Clearfield, Iowa — A fatal shooting occurred early Thursday in Taylor County, Iowa, claiming the life of a 19-year-old man. Local authorities along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations are probing into the incident that has shaken the small town of Clearfield.
Shortly after 3 a.m., Taylor County dispatchers were flooded with calls reporting a shooting at Bootleggers Bar and Grill on Broadway Street. When deputies arrived, they discovered a young male, later identified as 19-year-old Colby Nelson from Lenox, lying unresponsive with a fatal gunshot wound.
Witness reports to law enforcement suggested a heated altercation inside the bar led to the tragic outcome. According to the arrest affidavit, a deputy on scene identified a suspect, Alan Schultz, 37, from Bedford, who was seen standing near the victim’s body. Schultz was detained after he purportedly confirmed his role in the shooting.
Investigations revealed that a disagreement had flared between Nelson and Schultz earlier in the evening. The argument escalated when Schultz attempted to leave, returned armed, and confronted Nelson twice before discharging his weapon at Nelson’s face. According to witnesses and the suspect’s own admission to a DCI agent, Schultz emptied his handgun and then awaited arrest by law enforcement officers.
Schultz was taken into custody and booked into the Taylor County Jail, where he remains held on suspicion of first-degree murder.
