Javier Campos Accused Shooting Party at Mission District Block

San Francisco, CA – A judge has determined that Javier Campos, the suspect in the shooting of nine people at a Mission District block party, will stand trial for the 12 charges against him. Judge Jeffrey Ross found sufficient evidence to suggest Campos’ involvement in the shooting and his affiliation with the SureƱo street gang’s 16th Street clique.

Campos is accused of opening fire at the corner of 24th Street and Treat Avenue on June 9, before fleeing the scene. He was arrested a few days later in Santa Cruz on other warrants. Public Defender Seth Meisels has disputed the gang allegations against Campos, claiming that a different individual may have committed the shooting. Meisels stated that Campos is not a gang member and did not commit the shooting, without evidence to support his stance.

Campos faces eight counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm causing great bodily injury, with gang enhancements, in addition to charges for discharging a firearm from a car, possession of ammunition, and possession of a loaded firearm. A police witness from the District Attorney’s Office testified that Campos’ cell phone was tracked to the location of the shooting at the time it occurred, and later near where a gray Mercedes-Benz, which Campos had been seen driving, was located.

While some of the evidence presented was circumstantial and failed to directly link Campos to the shooting, Judge Ross found it sufficient to hold Campos to answer for the charges. Evidence from Instagram records and witness testimony from the prosecution suggested a gang-related motive for the shooting, as the area of the shooting is claimed by rival NorteƱo groups as their territory.

Campos sat silently through the multi-day hearing and chose not to appear before the judge’s ruling. He will be re-arraigned on his charges next week as the case proceeds to trial.
