PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A man has been sentenced to 26 years to life in state prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death at her Palm Springs home. Miguel Hernandez Toscano, 66, was convicted of first-degree murder and other charges in the 2022 killing of 48-year-old Ernestina Oropeza. This tragic incident occurred during a jealous rage just moments after she had broken up with him.
Oropeza and Toscano met at a casino where they both worked and began dating. However, their relationship turned rocky when Toscano discovered that Oropeza had been communicating with another man. The tension between the two escalated during a dinner with Oropeza’s children, where they argued about her interest in the other man.
After declining Toscano’s offer to pick up her children from school the following day, Oropeza told him she no longer wanted to be with him. It was at this moment that Toscano made the decision to grab a kitchen knife and follow her outside. In an interview with detectives, he admitted that his overwhelming jealousy led to the tragic event, stating, “If I can’t have her, then I don’t want anyone else to have her.”
Tragically, the victim’s daughters and their grandmother were present during the attack, witnessing Toscano plunging the kitchen knife into their mother. Despite their efforts to stop him, they were unable to prevent the tragedy and were forced to flee for their own safety.
The police arrived at the scene to find Oropeza motionless and surrounded by a significant amount of blood. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Toscano, however, had fled the scene. He later went to the Palm Springs police station the following morning to surrender and confess, acknowledging the mistake he had made.
