JOLIET, Ill. — Authorities in Texas reported that a 23-year-old man suspected of killing eight people in a suburban Chicago shooting died from a self-inflicted wound. Romeo Nance was sought in connection with the deaths of seven people at two different homes in Joliet, Illinois, as well as the shooting of two other men in separate incidents.
Authorities stated that Nance was related to most, if not all, of the victims in the shootings that occurred on Sunday. The victims included five women and three men, most of whom were believed to be related to the suspect. The shootings claimed the lives of seven individuals, followed by the random shootings of two other men. One man tragically died from his wounds, while the other survived.
An intense manhunt ensued as authorities tracked down Nance in Texas on Monday night. When confronted by law enforcement, Nance took his own life with a handgun. The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force located him at a gasoline station near Natalia, Texas, approximately 30 miles southwest of San Antonio.
The shootings at the two homes in Joliet left investigators reeling as they found fresh blood and what appeared to be gunshots at one of the residences. Inside, they discovered two people dead and notified the police. At the neighboring house, authorities found a total of six individuals, including a 35-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and four women and girls aged 14, 16, 20, and 38, all deceased.
It remains unclear what drove Nance to commit these senseless killings. Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans stated that the relationship between Nance and the victims is still being sorted through, and the circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are gathering additional information and evidence to process at crime labs. The motive behind these tragic killings may never be fully understood, as detectives continue to search for answers.
