Justice Reflected: The Legacy of Officer Andy Whitten Lives On as His Convicted Killer Passes Away

Albertville, Alabama — Larry Wayne Whitehead, 63, who was convicted of murdering Albertville Police Officer Andrew “Andy” Whitten in 1995, passed away Sunday while serving a life sentence in prison. Whitehead initially received the death penalty for his crime; however, in 2014, his sentence was commuted to life without the possibility of parole. He spent nearly three decades in custody before his death.

Albertville Police Chief J.T. Cartee expressed his surprise upon hearing the news and reflected on the long emotional journey he has endured since the tragedy. Cartee, who shared a close friendship with Whitten, emphasized the importance of remembering the officer’s legacy. “I came to terms with my feelings a long time ago,” Cartee said. “I felt a responsibility to honor Andy’s memory.”

The chief noted that he wrestled with whether to witness Whitehead’s execution had it taken place, and he openly disagreed with the life sentence assigned by the courts. “It seems like the focus often shifts to the offender, while many have forgotten about Andy,” he said. Cartee underscored the need to keep Whitten’s name and contributions alive in the community.

In discussing the concept of justice, Cartee maintained a belief that it ultimately prevails, albeit in different forms. “Justice will find a way to manifest, whether in this life or the next,” he added. Throughout the years, Cartee has worked to ensure that the legacy of his friend remains firmly rooted in the community they both served.

Reflecting on Whitten’s potential, Cartee indicated he believed Whitten was destined for greatness, perhaps even achieving the role of Police Chief or Sheriff. Their shared dreams of becoming detectives were deeply ingrained in their friendship, as was a mutual desire to effect positive change in the community. “We always aimed high,” he recalled. “We thought we could change the world together. Losing Andy has left a significant void in my life.”

Officer Whitten, remembered fondly for his dedication and potential, continues to be a cherished figure in Albertville, representing the values of service and sacrifice. His legacy, as Chief Cartee emphasizes, is one that will not be forgotten.
