Elgin, Scotland — A 20-year-old man was sentenced to nine years in prison for a violent sexual assault on a teenage girl in Cooper Park last August. Rapualla Ahmadze, also known as Rafiullah Ahmadzai, was found guilty of rape and threatening behavior after a jury concluded he acted in a predatory manner towards the victim, who did not know him prior to the attack.
During the sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Thomas Welsh KC described the assault as “shocking and violent,” highlighting the profound and lasting harm inflicted on the victim. The judge emphasized that the jury rejected Ahmadze’s claim of consensual sex and noted his actions were driven by a ruthless desire for domination rather than mutual consent.
Ahmadze’s defense attorney, Shaun Alexander, acknowledged the gravity of the crimes while emphasizing Ahmadze’s turbulent background. According to Alexander, Ahmadze faced significant trauma in his home country. He was reportedly conscripted by his uncle into the Afghan National Army, where he experienced violence and loss. His uncle was killed by the Taliban, and Ahmadze himself suffered a gunshot wound during his escape from captivity.
Defending Ahmadze’s character, Alexander argued that the defendant’s arduous journey from Afghanistan in search of safety had a profound impact on his development and maturity. The court learned that he arrived in the UK in 2023, seeking asylum after enduring the horrors of war.
In the August 4, 2024, attack, Ahmadze approached the victim in Cooper Park, making intimidating remarks before pulling her from a bench, restraining her, and ultimately raping her in a secluded area. His actions included sexual assault and further acts of violence that put the victim in grave danger.
Following the trial, Police Scotland reiterated its commitment to addressing sexual violence, urging community members to feel secure and supported. Detective Inspector Sam Buchan condemned Ahmadze’s predatory behavior, stating that the man exploited a vulnerable individual for personal gratification. He affirmed the police department’s ongoing mission to create a safer environment for women and girls while pursuing perpetrators of sexual violence.
At the conclusion of Ahmadze’s sentencing, the judge informed him of the potential for deportation once he completes his prison term, a matter to be determined by the Home Office.
