FALL RIVER, Mass. — Nearly two decades after a brutal assault on a teenager in Fall River, justice has finally been served. Jorge Lamas, who is now 37 years old, was recently convicted and sentenced to five to seven years in a state prison for his role in an armed robbery and a disturbing assault involving a dangerous weapon.
In July 2006, Lamas, then just 18, was implicated in an attack against a 17-year-old boy. The teenager was reportedly lured to a remote path near what was then known as the Rolling Green Apartments, now recognized as the Southwinds Apartments. It was there that Lamas, along with several accomplices, launched their violent assault.
Using beer bottles as makeshift weapons, the attackers brutally struck the victim and inflicted a deep slash across his face. The attack didn’t end with the lacerations; as the young man fell to the ground, he was further subjected to kicking and punching and was robbed of his sneakers and cell phone.
The aftermath of the assault left the victim with severe injuries, necessitating over 40 stitches to repair the large cuts on his face. In an effort to prevent him from reporting the incident, Lamas explicitly threatened the teenager against contacting the police.
Despite the fear and intimidation, the courageous victim was able to identify his assailant to the authorities. However, Lamas eluded capture by fleeing Massachusetts in 2008. He remained a fugitive until June of the previous year, when he was arrested in California and extradited back to Massachusetts to stand trial for his alleged crimes.
The long-delayed justice highlights both the persistence of law enforcement and the enduring pain of violent crime victims. The sentencing of Lamas closes a long-festering chapter for the victim and the community, reflecting the legal system’s eventual reach.
