Chennai, India — A significant development emerged in the investigation into the murder of K Armstrong, the Tamil Nadu branch chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), as one of the suspects was killed during a police operation in Chennai. The incident occurred late yesterday evening when the police were attempting to recover weapons related to the murder.
The suspect, identified as Thiruvengadam, was reportedly taken by police to the scene of the crime to assist in locating the murder weapon. During the operation, Thiruvengadam allegedly seized a firearm and opened fire on the officers. The police returned fire, fatally wounding him. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Earlier this month, Armstrong, a well-known local lawyer and political figure, was brutally murdered by a group of six individuals on motorcycles. The attack took place near his residence in the Sembium area of Chennai while he was engaging in a conversation with several party colleagues.
Following the violent incident, Armstrong was quickly taken to a hospital, but tragically, he did not survive the injuries sustained during the assault.
Armstrong, who had a notable career as a lawyer, had been elected to the Chennai Corporation Council in 2006. His prominence in the community was further bolstered two years ago when he organized a large-scale rally in Chennai, attracting national figures including BSP chief Mayawati.
The killing has sparked outrage and calls for justice, with BSP leader Mayawati demanding a thorough investigation. Emphasizing the need for improved safety and law enforcement, Mayawati has called on the state government to take decisive action to protect vulnerable communities and to consider transferring the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an independent inquiry.
Mayawati stated, “The need for a CBI investigation is paramount to ensure a transparent and fair probe. It is imperative that the state government, particularly the Chief Minister, fortifies law and order to instill a sense of security among the weaker sections of society.”
The police continue their investigation, seeking the remaining suspects involved in Armstrong’s murder. This case has brought attention to issues of political violence and the safety of public figures in regions grappling with such challenges. As the community mourns the loss of Armstrong and demands justice, the authorities are under increased scrutiny to handle the situation with the highest level of integrity and promptness.
