A mother, child and other residents escaped before two people were stabbed.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are investigating after a suspect armed with a knife threatened several people and stabbed a married couple Wednesday night at a southeast Houston apartment complex.
The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. May 13 in the 8600 block of Broadway, just north of Hobby Airport. Police said the case began as a disturbance near a convenience store and quickly spread to a nearby apartment property. Two people were stabbed, several others escaped injury and the suspect was later taken into custody.
Investigators said the suspect pulled a knife near the convenience store and chased a man, who got away unharmed. The suspect then entered the apartment complex, where residents reported seeing people run. Police said a woman and her 7-year-old child were then threatened. Lt. R. Willkens said the suspect told them she was going to stab them if they did not run. The woman and child made it inside safely.
The most serious injuries came shortly after, when the suspect reached a group of four people outside the complex, police said. Two people escaped. A 42-year-old woman was stabbed three times in the stomach, and her 69-year-old husband was stabbed twice in the stomach and once in the back. Police said the couple managed to return to their upstairs apartment before family members called 911.
Officers took the suspect into custody at the scene. Authorities had not released the suspect’s name by Thursday morning. Police reports differed on the suspect’s age, with initial accounts describing a woman in her 40s and later reporting identifying the suspect as a teenage girl. Investigators had not publicly resolved that conflict.
Police said they were also reviewing whether the suspect was experiencing a mental health or medical crisis. Willkens said the suspect told officers after being detained that she was taking seizure medication. Officials had not said whether the suspect knew the victims, whether the victims were targeted or whether the attack was random.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was expected to review the case for possible charges. Police had not released the victims’ conditions, and no court hearing had been announced. Detectives continued gathering witness statements Thursday and were working to confirm the suspect’s identity, age and medical history.
