KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A Knoxville man is facing multiple charges following a fatal crash that occurred late Thursday on Maynardville Highway. Authorities say 39-year-old Jose Roberto Rivera Recarte was observed leaving a bar in Union County shortly before the incident, with a witness commenting that he appeared to be too intoxicated to drive.
After noticing Rivera Recarte’s impairment, the witness attempted to offer him a ride but was refused. Concerned for public safety, the witness contacted the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies soon located Rivera Recarte’s vehicle, initiating a pursuit when he failed to stop. Although he briefly halted on Maynardville Pike, he fled the scene on foot before ultimately crashing his vehicle.
The crash resulted in Rivera Recarte crossing over the median and colliding with two other vehicles in a turn lane, leading to the deaths of two individuals whose identities have yet to be disclosed. Following the collision, the highway was closed for much of Friday morning as investigators worked at the scene.
Investigators noted that Rivera Recarte was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and had to be extracted from his vehicle by law enforcement. Responding officers observed that he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the strong scent of alcohol. Initially, Rivera Recarte claimed to have consumed only one drink, but later stated he had not been drinking at all. His results from several field sobriety tests prompted officers to arrest him on suspicion of DUI.
Subsequent to his arrest, Rivera Recarte was transported to UT Medical Center, where he became combative and resisted authorities. He faces serious charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, evading arrest, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment, among others.
Court records indicate that Rivera Recarte is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday morning. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is currently conducting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and a preliminary report has been requested by local media.
As the community grapples with the tragic loss of life, this incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding impaired driving and road safety. The ramifications of such reckless behavior extend far beyond the immediate event, impacting families and the community as a whole.
