LaPlace man arrested after shots fired at car with kids, ex

Authorities say no one was hurt; a judge set bond at $310,000.

LAPLACE, La. — A LaPlace man was arrested after deputies said he fired at a car carrying four people, including his two children and their mother, on Sunday night in Reserve. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said the round struck the passenger-side fender; no injuries were reported.

Investigators said the shooting happened Feb. 1 around 9:10 p.m., after a driver called 911 to report he was being followed. The case drew quick attention because two children, ages three and one, were inside the targeted vehicle. Detectives later identified the pursuing driver as Krishon Stevens, of LaPlace, and booked him Monday on several felony counts. The sheriff’s office said the passenger riding with Stevens was located and questioned but was not charged. A magistrate set bond at $310,000 as the investigation proceeds.

Deputies said the caller reported a confrontation as two vehicles traveled through Reserve shortly before the shot was fired. According to the sheriff’s office, Stevens pulled alongside the other car and yelled at the woman inside, who is the mother of his children, while the youngsters were strapped in the vehicle. A single round later struck the front passenger-side fender near the door jamb, deputies said, and responding units confirmed what appeared to be a bullet hole. “No one was injured during the shooting,” the agency said. Investigators traced the suspected vehicle and found Stevens and a passenger; only Stevens was arrested.

Stevens, arrested Feb. 2, was booked with assault by drive-by shooting; aggravated criminal damage to property; aggravated assault with a firearm; and illegal use of weapons. Authorities said multiple counts of aggravated assault with a firearm were applied. Detectives said the initial 911 call came at 9:10 p.m., giving them a tight timeline from the alleged tailing to the gunfire. The sheriff’s office also said deputies corroborated the complainant’s account at the scene by observing the damage on the vehicle. Officials did not report any recovered shell casings on the roadway and did not identify the passenger who rode with Stevens. The children’s names were not released because of their ages.

The incident unfolded in Reserve, a community a few miles west of LaPlace along Airline Highway, where deputies have investigated several vehicle-related shootings in recent years. Sheriff Mike Tregre has repeatedly emphasized quick arrests in felony gun cases and public updates through the agency’s website and social channels. Records show the office has reported multiple felony gun arrests already this month, underscoring a focus on violent-crime cases that involve children or occur on busy corridors. Sunday’s report also follows a series of recent crime updates parishwide, though officials did not link this case to any broader trend or dispute.

After the arrest, Stevens was taken to the parish jail in LaPlace. A judge set his bond at $310,000. Formal charging decisions will be made by prosecutors with the district attorney’s office after they review supplemental reports and any forensic findings. Deputies said they interviewed witnesses and the occupants of both vehicles and will continue gathering statements and evidence. The sheriff’s office did not announce a court date but said routine next steps include filing affidavits, forwarding the case to prosecutors, and scheduling an initial appearance if one has not occurred. Authorities have not released an expected timeline for additional updates.

Neighbors in Reserve said the stretch of road where the vehicles crossed is typically busy on Sunday nights as families return home. A resident who asked not to be named described hearing a loud pop and seeing flashing lights minutes later. Parents outside a nearby store called it frightening that toddlers were in the car. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the passenger in Stevens’ vehicle was not charged. No other injuries or damaged vehicles were reported by deputies at the scene.

As of Friday, Stevens remained jailed while the investigation continues. Detectives said more information could be included in future affidavits once lab and ballistics work is complete. The sheriff’s office said it will provide updates if new arrests or charges are made.
