CHICAGO, Ill. — A 26-year-old man was shot and killed late Sunday outside a restaurant in Greater Grand Crossing after he had just stepped out, Chicago police said Monday.
The shooting happened about 11:36 p.m. in the 100 block of East 71st Street, near South Michigan Avenue. Police said the man saw another man nearby before gunfire erupted. The victim was struck in the chest and also suffered a graze wound to the ankle.
Police said the man tried to run after realizing he had been shot, but he collapsed nearby. Officers treated him at the scene before he was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His name had not been released Monday morning.
Chicago police said Area One detectives are investigating the killing as a homicide. No arrests had been announced, and police had not released a description of the person who fired. Further details about what happened before the shooting were not immediately available.
The shooting added another homicide investigation to the South Side district as detectives worked to identify the gunman and review evidence from the area. Police did not say whether surveillance video, witnesses or shell casings had been recovered near the restaurant.
The block of East 71st Street sits in a busy commercial corridor in Greater Grand Crossing, a South Side neighborhood where restaurants, shops and traffic routes sit close to residential streets. Police have not said whether the victim was targeted or whether the two men knew each other.
