Laundromat Tragedy: Omaha Man Faces Second-Degree Murder Charge in Stabbing Death During Altercation Over Lighter

Omaha, Neb. — A 26-year-old man faced a preliminary hearing Wednesday in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred at a local laundromat. Deshawn Griffin is charged with the second-degree murder of 35-year-old Johnathan Wallace, who was killed in a confrontation in the parking lot of Anytime Laundry near 46th and Cuming Streets.

Prosecutors allege that Griffin inflicted two fatal stab wounds to Wallace’s chest. In addition, Griffin’s wife, 24-year-old Kayla Griffin, is facing charges as an accessory to a felony. During the court proceedings, defense attorneys requested that the charge against Griffin be downgraded to manslaughter, but the presiding judge found sufficient probable cause to maintain the second-degree murder charge.

According to testimony from a detective, the incident escalated when Wallace approached Griffin to ask for a lighter, leading to a verbal confrontation between the two. Autopsy results confirmed that Wallace died from stab wounds to the heart. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the laundromat, which helped trace a vehicle linked to the Griffins back to their home, where they executed a search warrant.

At their residence, detectives discovered a knife believed to be the murder weapon, along with blood-stained clothing. The detective revealed that Deshawn Griffin had shaved his head and beard before his arrest, an action that could potentially indicate an attempt to alter his appearance.

In a subsequent interview, Griffin recounted the events leading to the stabbing, stating that after he lent the lighter to Wallace, tensions flared when Wallace inquired about purchasing it. Griffin claimed he felt threatened when Wallace started reaching into his backpack, suspecting that he might be retrieving a weapon. He admitted to pulling out his own knife in an effort to protect himself. Despite these claims, a search of Wallace’s backpack yielded no weapons.

As the legal proceedings continue, the court will determine the course of the case against Griffin. The outcome may have significant implications for both the Griffins and the community grappling with yet another incident of violence.
