Lawsuits against Reddit and YouTube Over Buffalo Mass Shooter Enablement Heading to Trial

Buffalo, New York – Reddit and Google’s YouTube are facing lawsuits for their alleged role in enabling a white supremacist to carry out a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo. The judge ruled that the social media giants must face the lawsuits brought forth by 25 plaintiffs, who claim that the platforms played a part in addicting and radicalizing the shooter, Payton Gendron, who killed 10 Black individuals in 2022 at Tops Friendly Markets.

The plaintiffs, including store employees, customers, and the son of one of the deceased victims, witnessed the tragic events of the racially motivated shooting in May 2022. Despite Reddit and YouTube’s defense that they merely hosted third-party content and should not be held liable, Justice Paula Feroleto allowed the plaintiffs to proceed with their claims, stating that the platforms may have owed a duty to the victims due to their defective design.

The judge highlighted the mental distress experienced by witnesses of the attack as a key factor in allowing the negligence-based claims to move forward. Reddit responded by stressing that hate and violence have no place on its platform, reaffirming its commitment to removing harmful content and ensuring compliance with community guidelines. Meanwhile, YouTube expressed disagreement with the court’s decision and vowed to appeal while offering condolences to the victims and their families.

The lawsuits, filed by the gun control advocacy group Everytown Law, seek civil damages from various parties, including Alphabet, Google, retailers accused of selling firearm equipment to Gendron, and his parents. Gendron, who pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism charges motivated by hate, was sentenced to life in prison without parole in February 2023. The U.S. Department of Justice has also announced plans to seek the death penalty in federal charges against him.

The legal battle underscores the growing scrutiny on social media platforms for their role in spreading harmful content and influencing individuals towards violent ideologies. As the case unfolds, it raises important questions about the responsibilities of tech companies in addressing online radicalization and preventing tragic events like the Buffalo mass shooting. The outcome of these lawsuits could have significant implications for the regulation of online platforms and accountability for their users’ actions.
