The driver, identified as 42-year-old Claudiu-Carol Kondor, was declared dead at the scene in the Wortley area after he encountered the thief on Tuesday evening. The assailant was attempting to hijack Kondor’s silver Ford Transit Cargo van while he was making deliveries.
Mark Ross, 32, from Conference Road in Armley, stands accused of the killing and awaits a court appearance scheduled for Friday at Leeds magistrates’ court. The authorities detained him following the crime, highlighting a rapid response to the shocking event.
The tragedy unfolded on Heights Drive but initiated in Alliance Street where Kondor had parked to distribute packages. Employed by a partner company of Amazon, the victim was described as a dedicated worker deeply involved with his team and the community.
As police arrived around 6:50 p.m., they found Kondor unconscious, having been severely injured during the theft attempt. Despite immediate attempts by passersby to assist him, their efforts were in vain.
Tributes to Kondor have poured in, illustrating the esteem he held in his professional and personal life. “He was a friend, a confidant, and a valued member of our team,” stated his employer on Wednesday evening. His death has left his family, including his wife Mariana, in profound grief.
In response to the tragedy, Mike Neill, Kondor’s operations manager at SP Transport Group, organized a fundraising initiative to support the bereaved family, capturing community support through a GoFundMe page. “This unimaginable loss has left us all devastated,” Neill wrote, reflecting the deep connections Kondor had forged.
Compounding the incident, a 24-year-old man named Eddie Hampshire was also arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday and is currently in custody, while a woman was apprehended on suspicion of assisting an offender and later released under investigation.
