Long Island, New York — Rick Davies, a pivotal figure in the 1970s British rock scene and co-founder of the legendary band Supertramp, passed away on September 5 at the age of 81. His death followed a prolonged battle with Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer, as announced by the band through heartfelt social media tributes.
The surviving members of Supertramp expressed their sorrow in a statement on Facebook, reflecting on their five-decade friendship with Davies. “The Supertramp Partnership is very sad to announce the death of Rick Davies after a long illness,” the post read. They extended their condolences to his family, particularly his wife, Sue Davies.
Davies was not only the band’s co-founder but also a key songwriter and the distinctive voice behind some of Supertramp’s most memorable hits. His partnership with Roger Hodgson resulted in classics such as “Goodbye Stranger,” “The Logical Song,” and “Breakfast in America,” which solidified the band’s place in rock music history. The statement honored his contributions, noting that his “soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer” were essential to the band’s unique sound.
In 1970, Davies teamed up with Hodgson to form Supertramp, and they were soon joined by musicians Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg, and John Helliwell. The band’s career peaked from the early 1970s to the early ’80s, during which they produced a series of chart-topping hits and received four Grammy nominations. Their album “Breakfast in America” was notably nominated for Album of the Year in 1980 and became a cultural landmark.
However, the band’s dynamics shifted after Hodgson’s departure in 1983, stemming from creative differences. The final album featuring the band, “Slow Motion,” was released in 2002, but the creative legacy they built together remains influential.
Davies faced a significant health challenge in 2015, when he was diagnosed with cancer just before a planned 25-date European tour. The diagnosis forced the band to cancel the reunion tour, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing his treatment during that tumultuous time.
Rick Davies’ legacy as a musician extends beyond his years with Supertramp; he played a crucial role in shaping the sound of a generation. His contributions to music continue to resonate with fans around the world, ensuring that the melody of his work will endure long after his passing.
