Line Cutting Escalates to Tragedy: Phoenix Man Shot Dead Over Bathroom Dispute

PHOENIX, Ariz. — A confrontation over a bathroom line at a local gas station turned fatal, leading to the arrest of a man who allegedly shot his opponent. The incident occurred on January 16 at a QuikTrip store, resulting in the death of 52-year-old Danny Kaster. Authorities apprehended 25-year-old Deondre Franklin in connection with the shooting.

According to law enforcement, the altercation took place shortly before 8 a.m. as Kaster and Franklin encountered each other in line for the bathroom. Witnesses reported that Kaster was shot multiple times, with wounds to his face, shoulder, and leg. Emergency responders found him on the floor outside the men’s restroom, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Court documents suggest that the dispute escalated quickly when Kaster informed Franklin about the line for the restroom. Franklin allegedly responded provocatively, igniting a heated argument. Witnesses described Franklin challenging Kaster, leading them both to exit the restroom for further confrontation. Gunfire soon erupted outside, shocking others in the gas station.

One witness recounted seeing Franklin brandishing a firearm while Kaster attempted to wrest it away from him. The same witness heard multiple gunshots before rushing to assist Kaster when he realized the severity of his injuries. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Franklin shooting Kaster before fleeing the scene in a gray sedan with a female companion.

Following the shooting, Franklin reportedly reached out to his family, informing them of the incident. His mother advised him to turn himself in, which he did the following day. During questioning, Franklin claimed he had no intention of causing harm and described feeling threatened by Kaster. He stated that he was aware of the bathroom line only after Kaster pointed it out and became confrontational.

Family members of Kaster have expressed their grief over the tragic loss. A memorial has been established outside the QuikTrip in his honor, where friends and family remember him as a beloved brother and dog enthusiast. Kaster’s sister depicted the incident as a nightmare: “He left for work on Friday, never expecting this would be the last time we spoke,” she lamented.

In an effort to assist the family with funeral costs, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. Meanwhile, Franklin has been charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody as the investigation continues. Community members are left reeling from the violent turn of events over what many see as a trivial dispute.
