HASTINGS, New Zealand — Junior Fa’amalosi Isaako, a resident of Flaxmere, is being honored for his courageous actions during a violent incident that took place in June. Isaako intervened to save a man who had been critically injured in a stabbing, an act that has earned him a place among the ten recipients of the prestigious New Zealand Bravery Awards.
The incident unfolded when Isaako was awakened by heated arguing outside his home. Curiosity led him to step out, where he discovered a distressing scene across the street. A man was violently assaulting another, wielding a knife as he stabbed the victim several times. A second assailant joined in, delivering kicks and punches to the injured man, who was curled on the ground in a defensive posture.
Without hesitation, Isaako rushed to the scene. His intervention caused one of the assailants to flee, while he was able to restrain the armed attacker. In a display of remarkable strength and composure, he disarmed the man, preventing any further harm. Following this confrontation, Isaako turned his attention to the victim, who was in urgent need of medical assistance.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Isaako quickly moved the injured man to a grassy area and fashioned a makeshift tourniquet from a towel, applying pressure to stem the bleeding. He promptly contacted emergency services, remaining with the victim to provide first aid until help arrived. His prompt and selfless actions were instrumental in stabilizing the victim, who was eventually transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital for further treatment.
Following the incident, police identified a 39-year-old suspect who was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. This individual is set to face legal proceedings at the Napier District Court later this month.
Isaako will be recognized at the New Zealand Bravery Awards ceremony on Saturday, where he will receive the New Zealand Bravery Decoration. Among the other recipients is a 12-year-old boy who heroically prevented his father from sustaining serious injuries. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who will present the awards, praised the bravery of all honorees, emphasizing their willingness to put themselves at risk to protect others.
Luxon stated that these individuals exemplify the qualities society values, noting that when lives are at stake, their immediate responses can have profound impacts. His remarks highlight the unpredictable nature of such situations, underscoring that not everyone knows how they will react in a moment of danger until faced with it.
