Local Store Owner Tragically Killed, Teen Arrested Following Shooting Incident in Rowan County

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A tragic incident occurred Tuesday morning when Mainank Patel, 36, was fatally shot at his business, the Tobacco House store. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a juvenile has been detained in connection with the shooting which took place around 11:18 a.m.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded after a disconnected 911 call was traced to the store located at the intersection of Airport and Miller Chapel roads. Captain Mark McDaniel, the public information officer, noted that further calls from the site reported the gunfire shortly before deputies arrived.

Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Patel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and later moved to Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Security camera footage from the store showed a suspect described as a tall, slender white male fleeing the scene. The individual was caught on camera wearing black shorts, a black hoodie paired with a black ski mask, white Nike sneakers with burgundy logos, and appeared to be carrying a black handgun.

McDaniel indicated that the motive behind the shooting appears to be related to a robbery, although this has not been definitively confirmed. The search for the suspect was extensive, involving state highway patrol helicopters and police K-9 units, yet no additional suspects were apprehend.

Community members, family, and customers who knew Patel expressed deep sorrow and confusion over the violence towards a man they described as exceptionally kind and community-oriented. They gathered at the scene, struggling to understand the senseless loss.
