ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — A local restaurant owner was violently attacked within his own establishment over the weekend, an incident that was captured on video and has since garnered widespread attention. The assault took place at Amigo Street Tacos in St. Clair Shores, a popular spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and community presence.
The accused, 20-year-old Daveon Jahmel Godbold from Eastpointe, was apprehended shortly after the incident during a routine traffic stop near the scene. He faces multiple charges including unarmed robbery, resisting arrest, malicious destruction of property, aggravated assault, and the illegal manufacture and delivery of marijuana. Following an arraignment on Tuesday, the court mandated that Godbold wear a GPS tether and set his personal bond at $25,000.
The confrontation reportedly began when Godbold, who was at the restaurant to pick up a DoorDash order, attempted to use a restroom that was out of order. The restaurant’s owner, 45-year-old Jose Perez, mentioned that the restroom was disconnected from the water supply and inoperable at the time. According to Perez, he informed Godbold that due to his actions in the restroom, he would not hand over the food order. This led to a heated altercation.
Perez recounted that during the dispute, Godbold snatched the food off the counter and threw it onto the floor, escalating to more aggressive behavior. “He started to act so violent,” Perez said, leading him to attempt to call emergency services. During the tumult, surveillance footage captured Godbold kicking a window before fleeing the venue.
Shortly after the initial assault, video evidence shows Godbold returning with an accomplice, and both men launched another attack on Perez. Perez defended himself as best he could under the circumstances, suffering injuries that included swelling to his head, back, and knee. The pain was significant enough that Perez required medical attention following the assault.
In the aftermath of the incident, the St. Clair Shores community rallied in support of Perez, showing a strong stance against violence and in solidarity with local businesses. Perez owns five other dining locations across metropolitan Detroit, further highlighting his commitment to the local economy and community welfare.
Police are currently searching for the accomplice involved in the attack and have asked for the public’s assistance in identifying him. Meanwhile, Perez has also reported the incident to DoorDash to address the role of their intermediary in the unfortunate event.
Community members and law enforcement alike have been shocked by the brazenness of the attack, particularly as it occurred within a space typically associated with family and social gatherings. Local officials and residents alike underscore the importance of maintaining safety and supporting those who foster positive community spaces.
Anyone with information about the attack or the individuals involved is encouraged to contact the St. Clair Shores Police Department to assist in the ongoing investigation. The incident has not only highlighted the risks local business owners face but also the broader implications of accountability and safety in the gig economy.
