London, UK – A 17-year-old has been convicted of murder after chasing and stabbing 16-year-old Renell Charles in a “brutal attack.” The incident, which took place on May 5th, resulted in the tragic death of Charles, who was a pupil at Kelmscott school in East London.
The perpetrator, who cannot be named due to their age, was found guilty by a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court and also convicted of possession of a bladed article. The court heard how the accused jumped out of a taxi and attacked Charles, who was sitting at a bus stop with friends. After a brief verbal altercation, Charles attempted to escape but was chased down and stabbed twice, ultimately succumbing to his injuries shortly after the attack.
In an attempt to evade capture, the teenager changed clothes and swapped sim cards after the murder. However, the police were able to track him down and he was arrested on suspicion of murder and later charged. Despite initially refusing to comment during the police interview, the accused later claimed self-defense, a defense which was contradicted by CCTV and witness evidence.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers expressed his thoughts for Charles’ family and loved ones, acknowledging that nothing will ease their pain but hoping that the conviction will bring some comfort. The convicted teenager is set to be sentenced at the same court on 14th March.
The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of carrying and using knives to resolve disputes. It highlights the need for increased efforts to prevent youth involvement in violent crime and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
