The victim, 67-year-old Matthew Fleming, was shot while working in his aunt’s backyard on Wednesday night. His aunt, Georgia Shanima Montgomery, is now left to care for his beloved dog, Rocky. She described her nephew as a kind-hearted man who always tried to avoid conflict.

Montgomery recounted that Fleming had been helping her with yard work before the tragedy occurred. Earlier in the day, Williams had assisted Fleming, and everything seemed amicable. However, Williams’ demeanor changed after returning from a trip to the store with Fleming.

Upon their return, Williams began quoting scriptures loudly and accused a neighbor of stealing money from him. Montgomery asked him to calm down, but the situation escalated. Fleming called out to his aunt, urging her to check on their neighbor, and moments later, a gunshot rang out.

According to a report from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, deputies arrived at Williams’ home following his call about a stolen lottery ticket. As they approached, they heard a gunshot and saw Williams holding a firearm. He reportedly claimed that Fleming was the one who had been stealing his lottery tickets.

Fleming was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He leaves behind two daughters and several grandchildren. His dog, Rocky, is set to be taken in by one of his daughters.
