Lumberton, NC — Residents in several Lumberton neighborhoods are raising alarms about a pack of dogs purportedly roaming the streets and causing death and havoc, particularly targeting domestic pets. Beginning in July, multiple accounts have surfaced of these dogs attacking and killing cats, unsettling the community.
Jaki Heinz, a Lumberton local living in the Candlestick neighborhood, reported a particularly distressing incident involving the death of her 10-year-old cat, Meio, on July 21. She described finding her beloved pet in a gruesome state outside her home after an attack by what she believes was the same group of dogs. “The devastation of losing a pet in such a violent manner is unimaginable,” Heinz expressed, detailing the severe injuries inflicted on Meio.
In addition to the emotional trauma, Heinz noted the physical damage to her property. The attacking dogs had attempted to reach her hiding cat, in the process causing significant damage to her car by tearing out wiring and plastic, a repair that took over a week to resolve.
The dogs, described as very aggressive, have reportedly been seen prowling around homes in Stonegate and Candlestick neighborhoods between 2 AM and 4 AM. These incidents have not only led to property damage but have also instilled a fear among residents for the safety of their pets and potentially, their children. Although recognizing it as unlikely, Heinz voiced concern over the possibility of these dogs attacking a small child.
Community members report multiple sightings and encounters with these dogs, yet their origin and where they reside during the day remain unknown. The concern extends beyond the immediate threat; the potential for the dogs to harm more pets or, worse, people looms large in the minds of Lumberton residents.
