BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute at his home. Jeffrey Rogers stands accused in the death of 20-year-old Bria McNeal-Williams, whose tragic fate has drawn attention to the complexities of domestic violence situations.
The incident occurred around midday Thursday when police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on 10th Street in Pratt City. Upon arrival, officers discovered McNeal-Williams unresponsive at the back doorway of the house. Emergency responders pronounced her dead shortly thereafter.
Rogers initially called 911, claiming he had shot an intruder attempting to break into his home. However, investigations revealed the situation to be a domestic matter involving the couple, not a burglary as Rogers suggested. Officer De’Rell Freeman stated that evidence indicated McNeal-Williams was not attempting to break in.
The local authorities utilized a gunfire detection system, which confirmed that multiple shots were fired at the scene. Following the shooting, Rogers was taken into custody, and further inquiries into the incident led to his formal charges on Saturday.
In addition to the murder charge, Rogers faces an additional count for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm due to his previous felony conviction. Currently, he remains without bond at the Jefferson County Jail as the investigation continues.
