Deputies found 41-year-old Tonya Swink dead after responding to a home on Maritime Drive, authorities said.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 29-year-old man has been charged with murder after his girlfriend was fatally shot Saturday evening at a home in northeast Harris County, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Deputies found Tonya Swink, 41, with a gunshot wound after responding about 6:30 p.m. to the home in the 11100 block of Maritime Drive. Swink was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified her boyfriend, Cody Prince, as the suspect and said he was taken into custody.
Investigators went to the property after Prince’s stepfather contacted authorities, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. Officials have not released more information about what the stepfather reported or whether he was at the home when the shooting occurred.
Gonzalez said investigators believe Swink had threatened to end her relationship with Prince before she was shot. Authorities also believe the couple had been drinking before an argument, but the sheriff’s office has not released a detailed timeline of the dispute.
The allegation that Prince shot Swink is part of an active criminal case. A murder charge is an accusation, and Prince is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court. Information about an attorney representing him was not immediately available.
Officials have not said whether deputies recovered a firearm or whether anyone else witnessed the shooting. The sheriff’s office also has not released information about forensic evidence collected from the home.
Swink’s death remained under investigation as homicide detectives worked to document the scene and determine the full sequence of events. Authorities have not announced whether additional charges are being considered.
Prince remained in custody following the filing of the murder charge. Court and bond information had not been released in the information available Sunday.
